Technical Visit to Combined
Heating and Power System (CHP) at Alice Ho Miu Ling Netersole Hospital
6th May 2017 (Saturday); 10am to 12pm
Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital, Tai Po, New Territories
Thermal power plants and heat engines generally do not convert all of
their thermal energy into electricity. In most heat engines, more than
half is lost as excess heat. By capturing the excess heat, Combined
Heating and Power System (CHP) uses heat that would be wasted in a
conventional power plant, potentially increasing the efficiency, and
so, as a result, consuming less fuel to produce the same amount of
useful energy.
The Hong Kong and China Gas Co., Ltd. Has worked with the Hospital
Authority to develop the first commercially successful case of
utilizing landfill gas in CHP plant for a distributed energy stem at
Tai Po AHML Nethersole Hospital. The system generates electricity by
landfill gas and recovers the waste heat from flue exhaust and jacket
cooling water for steam and hot water generation. Such project has set
an excellent example of smart usage of CHP system, the advantages of
distributed energy system and social engagement on sustainability.
In the visit, the participants will have a change to take a look of the
state-of-the-art CHP plant and its associated facilities.
