Technical Seminar on Applications of Membrane-type Elastic Meta-material on Indoor Acoustic

Date, time & venue

2018-01-13;10;00 to 12:00nonn;HKUST Room 4504

Programme Highlights
After some fifteen years of research and development, in addition to further the understanding of fundamental physics, membrane-type elastic meta-materials have evolved into three types of functional devices, namely sound blocking, sound absorption, and vibration damping. These devices are compact, lightweight, broadband, can be made with all metallic components to function in extreme environments. These devices are also easy to install. Current research activities include working on the application of these devices in a wide range of areas, such as residential and commercial building soundproof walls and floors/ceilings, trains, motor vehicles, ships, aircraft, highway and railway noise control, factories, construction machinery, power plants, etc.

Organised by HKIOA; Supported by HKIE-MMNC

Itinerary
10:00-10:15 Registration
10:15-11:45 Seminar & Demonstration on Damped Noise Shields
11:45-12:00 Q&A
12:00 Event ends

Speaker
Professor Yang, Zhi Yu, Jason, is the Professor of Department of Physics, and the Environmental Science Program at the University of Science and Technology. Prof Yang’s research area at present is the experimental elastic metamaterials. He participated in the study of the original locally resonant sonic metamaterials (coated spheres) and invented the membrane type metamaterials, based on which some novel structures and properties were discovered. These metamaterials have a vast range of applications in residential and commercial buildings, trains, ship, aircraft, factories, power plants, satellites and spacecraft, etc.

Registration
The visit is free of charge for members of the Hong Kong Institute of Acoustics or HKIE, HK$100.00 for non-members. The total number of participants is limited to 40 for this event. Registration is accepted on a first-come-first-served basis and preference will be given to members of the Institutes. If interested, please register via the LINK by 11 Jan 2018.
