Session 1: “Bulk Carrier Structural Defects and
Inspection” by Ir Dick D C Kam
Bulk
carriers play a vital role in international sea trade. In the past decades bulk
carriers have become larger, carrying ever increasing tonnage of various bulk
cargoes. The very nature of bulk cargoes and its handling makes bulk carriers
exposed to various kinds of structural damage and inspection of hull structure
became a mandatory requirement under international conventions. This
presentation will give a brief introduction of bulk carrier structure,
different kinds of structural defects found on bulk carriers and the inspection
arrangements to identify them.
Session 2: “Hong Kong – A
Maritime Hub” by Mr Kaushik Roy
Hong
Kong has every potential to match with the ‘hub’ concept. It is geographically
well placed, with robust financial infrastructure, globally connected and
gateway to the World for China – an economic powerhouse. In 2017, Hong Kong was
World’s 7th largest trading economy and became second leading maritime centre.
Autonomy, supportive government, vibrant city living, attractive tax system and
good legal foundations made Hong Kong so attractive for the professionals. One
Belt One Road project will enhance Hong Kong’s presence as maritime hub. The
speaker will discuss past, present and future of Hong Kong as a maritime hub.
Session 3: Maritime
Autonomous Surface Ship” by Mr Deling Wang
With the rapid development of technologies of artificial
intelligence, information physical system, environmental information
perception, satellite and communication, big data, remote control, fault
diagnosis, etc., a great progress has been made in the Maritime Autonomous
Surface Ship (MASS) in recent years. In the future, the wide application of
MASS will certainly bring great changes to the shipping industry, and will in
no doubt have a great impact on the seafarer post setting, seafarer demand,
knowledge structure, seafarer education and training and so on. This project
predicted the influence of MASS on the change of seafarers' post and quantity,
navigation mode, knowledge structure, marine education and training
development, and discipline arrangement by means of researching on the
development of ship technology, statistics on seafarers' historical
development, ship manning comparison, maritime laws and regulations,
application of new ship technologies and psychological analysis.
Speakers
Ir
Dick D C Kam, after graduated from Hong Kong University with Bachelor’s Degree
in Mechanical Engineering, joined class society BUREAU VERITAS in 1991 as
training surveyor. In the last 27 years, Mr. Kam has served various positions
in Bureau Veritas including ship surveyor for new construction and in service
ships, safety management auditor, operation manager and internal trainer for
surveyors. Mr. Kam is currently General Manager of Bureau Veritas Hong Kong
office.
Mr
Kaushik Roy is SHEQ Manager, DPA, CSO at CESM, from MOL, London. He has a wide
range of experience, predominantly on tankers of LNG, LPG, Ethylene, product
and crude oils. He has Joint Venture LNG ship management company start-up
experience in a Chinese state-owned shipping project (APLNG). He brought world’s
first Green Award to LNG vessel and operator. He was involved in Argentina,
Indonesia and Japan’s 1st LNG STS operations & commissioning of Tianjin,
Dhabol and Adriatic-LNG terminals. Kaushik is Fellow of the four esteemed
professional institutions publishes articles, speaks & chairs seminars,
participate in panel discussions.
Mr Deling Wang, master mariner/lecturer in Shanghai Maritime
University, and part-time maritime lawyer in WINTELL&CO. He had been
working at sea in OOCL and Maersk line fleet for nearly ten years. He is now
also a PhD candidate majoring in Shipping Management and Law, research member
of Shanghai Maritime University International Maritime Research Center
(SMUIMRC), and technical officer of Maritime Technology Cooperation Center in Asia,
which is authorized by IMO. He is mainly involved in the research of maritime
conventions, maritime laws and regulations, undertaking some IMO training
programs as a instructor, and participating many times in the writing of IMO
proposals. He, as a maritime attorney, has also dealt
with numerous cases of ship collision and seafarer related disputes.
