Technical Seminar: Steps to Zero-Carbon Ready Building by Energy Audit & Chiller Plant Improvement

Date, time & venue

2024-04-11;6:30-8:00 pm;HKIE EngHub - Room 309, 3/F, HK NEO, 123 Hoi Bun Road, Kwun Tong

Programme Highlight

Since its launch in September 2023, HKGBC’s Zero-Carbon-Ready Building Certification Scheme has stirred heated discussion among the building industry on what and how-to-do questions. Today’s presentation will start from term interpretation on concepts such as “Zero Carbon”, “Zero Energy” or “Zero-Ready” in both international and HK local contexts to answer the question “How?”. We will introduce a well-decided roadmap on decarbonization of a normal building in future years leading up to 2050. Main improvement methodologies will include proper E&M maintenance, periodic system review, modernization upgrades, and necessary carbon/energy tradeoffs, while a regular Energy Audit always dominates when we do budget planning before any implementations. Various key findings & suggestions from recent completed building audit will be shared to help the audience in understanding the improvement steps toward zero-carbon ready in this roadmap.

In the second session of webinar the presentation will focus on the most important building system – Chiller plant – to know that it is crucial to recognize that the chiller plant accounts for a significant portion, approximately 40%, of electrical consumption in most buildings. Therefore, understanding how to achieve a zero-carbon HVAC system becomes paramount. With a well-defined roadmap in place, we aim to advocate for the adoption of high-efficiency chiller systems that effectively reduce energy consumption with the important keynote on proper equipment maintenance to uphold efficiency. The session will also delve into the challenging unique building environment of Hong Kong in adopting the latest energy efficient chiller system solutions. By sharing these insights, attendees will gain a deeper understanding on the role of a sustainable energy efficient HVAC system and the steps in HVAC towards zero-carbon ready goal.
