Programme Highlights
Hong Kong is
a highly developed city with a complex underground water pipe network. Water
leaks are always a problem in most countries, and thus, the Water Supplies
Department (WSD) in Hong Kong is striving to have a means to identify the pipe health
with little disruption to the public, such as ground digging. However, internal
pipe inspection by humans is difficult for pipes with a 1000 mm diameter or
less, as it is an unpleasant task in a confined space. Thus, robotics has
become a smart choice. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Department of
Industrial and Systems Engineering, has collaborated with the WSD to develop
robotic modules for water mains services, including the internal pipe
inspection for the 600 mm diameter pipe. This presentation is about the
engineering designs and developments of the related robotic modules.

Ir Dr. Chan Ching-Yuen
At Salford
University in the United Kingdom, Dr Chan Ching-Yuen received a BEng (Hons) in
Mechanical Engineering in 1989. He later earned a PhD in Manufacturing
Engineering in 1994. He served as a lecturer at The Hong Kong Polytechnic
University's Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering from 1994 until
2020. He is currently a Senior Project Fellow at the same university, working
on water main robotics projects. His areas of interest in research include
staff rostering, production monitoring, automation, robotics, and production
system modelling. He is also a Corporate Member of the Hong Kong Institution of
Engineers and a member of the Logistics Policy Committee of the Chartered
Institute and Transport in Hong Kong.
In addition to publishing journals and conference papers, Dr. Chan received numerous outside research funding sources over the years, including the Innovation and Technology Support Programme and the Teaching Company Scheme (TCS) from the Innovation and Technology Fund (ITF). The research outcomes are conducive and applied to the industry and related supporting parties.
