Technical Seminar: Importance of proper inspection of welds in mechanical installations

Date, time & venue

2022-11-24;6:30pm – 8:00pm;Chan Yat Mei Sophie Room, 9/F, HKIE HQ and Webinar

Programme Highlights
Welding is one of the most common fabrication processes that allows engineers to join materials together. The process involves the use of by using high heat to melt the parts together and allowing them to cool, causing fusion. A proper welding process could produce joints that may have superior mechanical strength that the base metal. However, to ensure that a weld could function as designed, it is important that the quality of the welds be checked after the completion of the welding process, and while this could be achieved by appointing a third party qualified inspector, it is also important for an engineer to understand how to make a simple judgement of whether there could be potential problems associated with the welds as fabricated, bearing in mind that a poor weld that was not detected by the qualified inspector could lead to catastrophic failure and which could lead to fatalities.

In this presentation, Ir Dr. Lim will share his valuable experience on the common defects that one could encounter when working with welded joint, and the various techniques that one could apply to check the integrity of the fabricated welds.

Speaker
Ir Dr. C.H. Lim
Ir Dr. C.H. Lim graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Hong Kong. His research area was on Deformation Behaviour of Materials. He is currently a director of Safety Accident and Failure Experts Limited which is a company providing independent technical investigations to the engineering field in Hong Kong, having prepared more than 3500 independent technical investigation reports many of which are related to failure of mechanical equipment in Hong Kong, China, South Korea, Japan, Thailand and Singapore, etc. Ir Dr. Lim is currently also a technical assessor of HOKLAS as well as HKIAS assessing Laboratories and Inspection Bodies providing testing and inspection services on construction materials, including tests and inspection activities related to welds.
