Date & Time: 3 Dec 2024 (Tuesday), 6:30pm -8pm
Venue: Chan Yat Mei
Sophie Room, HKIE Headquarters & Webinar
Programme
Highlights:
In 1990s, when
coal was still the mainstream power generation option in the world, CLP already
introduced nuclear power and natural gas power generation to Hong Kong to
significantly reduce emissions. In 2007,
CLP launched “Climate Vision 2050” to support the transition towards a
sustainable, low-carbon future and to guide the strategy on managing
climate-related risks and opportunities.
The climate target was further updated in 2021 and 2024, aiming at
achieving net-zero emission by 2050.
Hong Kong has
set targets to reduce half of the carbon emission by 2035 and then
achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. At
the peak of Hong Kong’s carbon emission in 2014, power generation accounted for
around 70% of the emission. It is
essential that electricity supply in Hong Kong is quickly decarbonised to set
the foundation for the economy and other sectors to reduce their carbon
footprint. This presentation will
highlight the challenges in this transformation and the plan in supporting both
the Climate Vision 2050 and carbon neutrality target of Hong Kong.
Speaker: Ir Thomas LUI Chi Wai,
