Programme
HighlightsThe HKIE Mechanical, Marine,
Naval Architecture and Chemical (MMNC) Division and HKUST Department of
Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) are pleased to organize a technical
visit to CLP Black Point Power Station (BPPS), one of Hong Kong’s major combined‑cycle
gas turbine (CCGT) power generation facilities.
Operated by CLP Power
Hong Kong Limited, BPPS plays a critical role in supporting Hong Kong’s
energy security, system reliability, and transition towards a lower‑carbon
power generation mix.
This technical visit offers
engineers a valuable opportunity to gain first‑hand exposure to large‑scale
industrial energy systems, where process engineering principles are applied
across fuel handling, thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, process
control, emissions management, water treatment, and safety engineering.
Participants will be introduced to the overall plant configuration and will
visit key areas within the station, including
viewing galleries and an internal bus tour of the site. From a professional perspective,
CCGT power plants provide an excellent real‑world context for understanding
how process integration, efficiency optimisation, and
environmental performance are balanced in modern utility‑scale
operations. The visit will highlight how engineering design and operational
decisions contribute not only to plant performance, but also to societal objectives,
such as reducing emissions, improving air quality, and ensuring a stable
electricity supply for Hong Kong.
The purpose of this visit is to
enable participants to:
- Appreciate the role of Chemical/Process
Engineering in modern power generation and energy
transition
- Enhance understanding of CCGT process
design and operation
- Gain insight into industrial safety,
environmental control, and system integration in a critical
infrastructure setting
- Foster valuable industry-academia
connections by engaging with practicing engineers and providing
practical, real-world experience to local Chemical Engineering students
from HKUST.
